A Portion of All Sales from the Red Beans and Rice Collection is donated to the National Museum of African American History and Culture
The New Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. is Now Open!!!
I am over-the-top delighted to represent my beloved city in the Food and Foodways Exhibition.
The Red Beans and Rice Fleur de Lis that I stand beside in this picture came out of an exhibition that I did at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum with my 4th - 7th grade art students in 2007.
The title of the exhibition was "Our Food Our Culture" with an emphasis on our long standing tradition of eating Red Beans and Rice on Mondays. You can find this meal on the menu of almost every local restaurant on Monday in New Orleans. I created this piece to inspire them to preserve and take pride in the rich food culture of New Orleans.
Although the fleur de lis has a long and complex history in our city, most grievously as a slave brand, today it is recognized as the emblematic symbol of the New Orleans Saints as well as the Louisiana State Symbol.
